Loch Sport
on the Gippsland Lakes is a coastal community that is surrounded
by National Park at its Eastern border, Coastal Park at its Western
border, and the 90 Mile beach to its South, as such Wildfire is
a very real threat and with its relative isolation from neighboring
brigades as support (being in excess of 60 kilometers from Sale),the
Loch Sport Fire Brigade has been keen to foster a close working
relationship with the emergency services in its close geographical
location.
The brigade recently
held a joint training exercise which included members from the
Loch Sport D.S.E. Summer Fire Crew, members from Golden Beach
Fire Brigade and Region 10 Operations Officer Allan Rankin, Stradbroke
Group Officer John Gerand and a visit by the Traralgon C.A.B.A.
Support Vehicle.
Those present were given information on G.P.S. (Global Positioning
System) units, their use and the need to be able to relate the
information provided to our own map books, dry firefighting methods,
and issues that related to communication in the National Park.
Speakers included Region
10 Operations Officer Allan Rankin, Stradbroke Group Officer John
Gerand, Loch Sport D.S.E. Ranger Henry Farrugia, Traralgon Fire
Brigade Lieutenant David Forrester and Loch Sport Fire Brigade
Captain Bryan de Graaf.
The day was topped
off with a B-B-Q provided by the Loch Sport S.E.S. unit, a terrific
example of all emergency services working together.
